PE & Sport Premium
What is PE & School Sport Funding?
In September 2013 the Government launched the PE and Sport Funding, which was initially for a two-year period but has now been extended. The aim of this money is to fund improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of pupils aged over 5 and under 11 years of age, so that the pupils develop healthy lifestyles. We have allocated our PE and Sports Funding to engage pupils at lunchtime, provide opportunities for pupils to participate in competitive sports within the local community, support physical activity for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds, all whilst continuing to support staff to become more confident and skilled in teaching PE within school.
The vision for Primary PE and Sport Funding is that ALL pupils leave primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in a physical activity and sport. (Association of Physical Education & Youth Sport Trust).
‘Physical education provides opportunities for pupils to be creative, competitive and to face up to different challenges as individuals and in groups and in teams. It promotes positive attitudes towards an active and healthy lifestyle’. The school ensures that every child is given an opportunity to experience a wide range of sporting and physical activities; which they can then build on in later life. With an increase in over 750,000 young people playing a sport regularly, it is something that South Wonston Primary School hopes to promote amongst its pupils.
School Ethos to Sport
The school is committed to offering a minimum of 2 hours high quality, well planned PE and Sports every week; delivered by a combination of school staff and visiting professional sports coaches. The delivery of lessons is within the PE framework but may also be linked to cross curricular activities.
At South Wonston there is an emphasis on fair play, sporting behaviours and the use of high quality provisions. Throughout the year pupils participate in games (including ball skills), gymnastics, dance and athletics. The pupils experience a wide range of games and skills across the school year, covering sports such as netball, hockey, athletics, tag rugby, tennis, football, cricket, dance, rounders, and swimming (year 5).
Year 5 pupils receive swimming coaching at the local sports centre, where pupils are grouped according to their swimming ability and receive instruction from professional swim coaches.
Pupils in Year 6 take part in Bikeability. We actively encourage all pupils to; walk, scoot or bike to school.
We hold a sports festival in the Summer term. All events are designed to promote inclusitvity so that all children are able to participate.
We are a member of the Winchester and Eastleigh School Sports Partnership and take part in fixtures, festivals and benefit from the support of the Sports Leaders.
We train our Y5/6 pupils to be play leaders so that they can actively support play activities during lunchtimes.
We liaise with local partners to provide KS2 children with advice on healthy living –physical, emotional & mental well-being both at school and off site.
Residential opportunities
During Year 6, pupils have the opportunity to participate in a residential visit where they take part in range of outdoor adventurous activities and team building challenges.
Extra-Curricular Sport
We constantly review the extra-curricular activities on offer in order to develop pupils’ physical competence and confidence, whilst encouraging the children to find enjoyment and fun in physical activity. In recent years, the after-school provision has included street dance, football, cross-country, cricket, karate, gymnastics, multi-skills, tag rugby, badminton, tennis and dodgeball.
We have used the Sport Funding to develop and improve provision in the following areas:
- Improve the teaching and learning of all aspects of PE
- Improve the resources and equipment used in PE Lessons
- Offer a wider range of opportunities in PE and extra-curricular clubs
- Develop the use of our school grounds for outdoor and adventurous PE
- Develop links with community groups and other agencies.
- Improve the PE skills and stamina of pupils.
We have achieved this by:
- Hiring qualified sports coaches to work with teachers.
- Providing teaching staff with resources and training in how to teach gymnastics effectively. (PE Suite Scheme of work).
- Providing quality training and CPD for our new PE leader.
- Updating our PE and Sport resources so staff can teach PE and Sport more effectively e.g. new gymnastics mats, athletics resources e.g. howlers for throwing, replacing hockey equipment and purchasing tri-golf equipment
- Introducing new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take up sport
- Funding additional swimming lessons for some children to ensure they met the required standard by the end of KS2.
- Introducing Sensory Circuits for some children who need to develop their fine and gross motor skills
